The 6 Secondary cities are experiencing different rates of urbanization. The National Strategy for Transformation (NST) 1 target is to increase the urban population from 17.3% (2013/2014) to 35% by 2024. The urbanization growth rates aided by the projected population increase from 10.5million in 2012 to 23.2million in 2050 and the associated transition towards a middle-income country by 2024 and a high-income country by 2050 are expected to increase the resource consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the built environment.
