Accra Storm Drainage: Lafa and Onyasia drainage channels (Development Phase)

The project in which ORIO is financially involved is defined as the (re-)construction of approximately 7.12 kilometers of the Lafa drain (concrete lined open trapezoidal sections ) which outfalls within the AMA catchment area and the reconstruction of 5.18 kilometers of the Onyasia drain (concrete lined open trapezoidal section) which is tributary of the Odaw drain. Furthermore the project involves the maintenance of the Lafa and Onyasia drains by the Drain Maintenance Unit of AMA for 10 years. The objective of the project is to improve the health and living conditions of the people within the communities along the drains by reducing the severity frequency and duration of flooding in the low-lying predominantly poor but commercially active areas of Accra in a socially and environmentally friendly manner. An estimated population of 698632 will benefit from improved drainage and reduction in perennial flooding and its attendant impacts.
