Greater Maputo Water Supply Project (O&M Phase)

In the capital town of Maputo the population is growing fast and the city expands mostly on the north-western side. The current Maputo Water Supply System provides water to the Southern areas of Maputo Metropolitan only and there is no public water supply system in the north-western site of the city. In addition to the lack of a public water system raw water resources in the north-western areas are not available.This project concerns the development construction and operation of the Corumana system. This system consists of a raw water intake and transmission system and a drinking water treatment plant with a capacity of 60000 m3 for clear water distribution and 6 main distribution centers. Distribution networks and water connections for domestic public and commercial industrial use. In 2017 when the system becomes operational it will provide drinking water to 365000 people in Maputo. This figure will increase to 550000 people by the year 2022 when the maximum design capacity is reached. The aim of the project is to provide high quality drinking water at a lower price than currently provided by private water suppliers. Furthermore it is aimed to lower the walking distance to the water source. As a result of the project in addition it is expected that companies that rely on a good quality supply of water (such as restaurants and food processing industries) will enter the market.The ORIO project forms a small part of the Greater Maputo Water Supply Expansion Project” (GMWSP), a drinking water project funded by the World Bank which is based on the Master Plan study for Greater Maputo.
