In Coconut producing countries, such as Indonesia and Vietnam, coconut waste is usually burned by farmers. Yearly an estimated 60 trillion coconut shells are burned and the Co2 emissions involved have a negative impact on the environment. GoodHout B.V. has developed a newly engineered wood alternative and bio composite called Coconut Husk Board (CHB) that is made from 100% coconut husk waste. As a High Pressure Laminate, HCP offers a high quality and sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and materials like MDF and HDF (high density Fibre Board), typically containing chemicals and used in furniture manufacturing and construction industries. Technical Assistance (DGGF-TA) provides support for a feasibility study into the set up of a pilot production plant in Indonesia or Vietnam to produce CHB. The study includes identifying the best location for the plant, assessing the available feedstock and utilities as well as assessing legal and financial matters to prepare for a bankable business case for future investments. Upon successful completion, the company will further invest in a pilot production plant for Coconut Husk Board (CHB) in one of these countries which will contribute to job creation, knowledge transfer and will help local coconut farmers diversify their activities which will improve their livelihoods. Furthermore the innovative use of coconut waste could have a positive impact on the environment and enable (furniture) manufacturers and designers to shift to more sustainable materials.
