Based on the congestion/limitations of the old city port and the existing Thilawa port and taken into account the growing transport needs to cater for domestic purposes and trade to West China, it is expected that the city ports and the actual Yangon river navigation capacity will reach its limits by 2027-2030 (depending on COVID-19 recovery). The Yangon Region Government (YRG) therefore intends to develop new port facilities towards the sea on the West Bank of the Yangon River. These new facilities are designated as a location to which the existing Yangon city ports are to be relocated (strategic objective), but will also provide necessary capacity and cost reduction on the short-term (as inner ports will be relocated gradually). By shifting the inner ports, the vessel turnaround time will be reduced as the port would be closer to the sea and the dredging expenses spending on inner shallow areas will be saved too. The map below provides an overview of the port locations in Yangon, indicating the two current port locations (City Port Area and Thilawa Port) and the intended relocation of the City Port Area (New West Bank Port).
