2019 DEC Cyclone Idai Phase 1: Inclusive Emergency Response for older men and women affected

Mozambique response: Cyclone Idai hit Central Mozambique on March 15, 2019, being the worst cyclone to hit the country in over two decades. Four of the country’s 10 provinces (Sofala, Manica, Zambezia and Tete) experienced flooding prior to the cyclone. 600 people are officially reported to have died in Sofala, Zambezia, Manica and Tete provinces, with numbers set to increase according to National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC). Almost 111,200 houses were destroyed and 112,000 partially damaged across the central region , with Sofala most affected. Over 70,000 affected people are still living as IDPs in collective campsites. Over 1.85 million people, 5% of whom are older persons are in need of relief support items, including food. As water recedes, there has been Cholera outbreaks with 5,000 reported cases despite vaccinations, cholera prevention and control messages being provided by the Cholera Taskforce and community engagement groups. Malawi response: Following heavy rains on 5-8 March, Cyclone Idai swept through Malawi on 14-15 March compounding the existing flood crisis and devastating livelihood, homes and infrastructure in its wake. In response to the flooding, the Government of Malawi declared a State of Disaster on 8 March (Republic of Malawi press statement). At least 15 districts across southern Malawi are affected by the cyclone, in which according to the Malawi Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) and UNOCHA 868,900 people have been affected (184,945 households). 86,980 individuals (16,545 households) have been displaced, with almost 60 fatalities and 670 injuries. Zimbabwe response: Cyclone Idai hit Zimbabwe on 14-15 March causing destruction, with estimated 270,000 affected, 21,000 displaced, 4,117 houses destroyed and 12,246 partially damaged, and 10 bridges destroyed across the Eastern part of the country (UN Migration Agency - Zimbabwe Cyclone Idai Response Situation Report #24 dated, 5-11 April 2019). There were at least 344 deaths, 175 injuries and 257 people reported missing (UNHCR, Zimbabwe Tropical Cyclone Idai Response 12-04-2019).
