The Nutrition Smart CommUNITY approach encompasses a combination of ‘systemic interventions’ at different level, designed to shift underlying causes of chronic hunger and malnutrition. It is based on 4 strategies: (1) Foster behavior change at household level; (2) Strengthen and support community-based institutions; (3) Activate and improve nutrition relevant services at community level; and (4) Advocate and promote a multisectoral community-based implementation model for the Right to Food. Each community must identify the specific drivers of malnutrition and address the problems using their own existing resources, including government services. The NSC concept combines 5 best practices, namely LANN+ through Participatory Learning and Action, Nutrition Camps, Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture, Nutrition Sensitive Microplanning and Strengthening Institutions.
