In an important rice-growing area in Madagascar, the early warning system introduced by Welthungerhilfe has struck and predicted a drought. In accordance with the protocol agreed upon in advance, highly vulnerable farming families now receive cash in advance via mobile phones distributed in advance, so that they can prepare for the lean period and do not have to sell livestock later out of necessity, for example, or buy at inflated prices or take their children out of school. With the help of this anticipatory 'damage limitation', later - then much more costly - measures can be avoided.
