The project supports the achievement of health and sanitation related to the Framework Millennium Development Goals (MDGs 4,5,6 & 7c). The Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) is taking steps to address Solid Waste Management (SWM) issues in the country, which have resulted in environmental pollution and conditions prejudicial to public health. In 2011 an lntegrated National Waste Management Policy (INSWP) was drafted which regulates the Solid Waste Management Sector of Sierra Leone and foresees the installation of waste collection and disposal facilities in the cities of Freetown, Bo, Makeni and Kenema. The project bases on the WHH implemented pilot project “Support to local public and private sector for solid waste management of Bo City and the environments“ (SLE 1017) and targets to establish a cost-efficient waste management System, which accommodates the increasing solid waste production of Bo City and provides for the safe recycling and disposal of waste. Improvements of solid waste management at household, community and city level will positively impact human health and lead to a reduction in the incidences of diarrhoea and malaria and other water-born and vector diseases, the number one causes of morbidity and mortality in Bo City. It is expected that an increased number of business registered and active in the waste management sector will introduce improved waste recycling and transformation technologies leading to a decline of water-borne disease by 15% at the end of project.
