IATI Identifier:
Kakuma Refugee Camp is home to approximately 195,000 refugees from over 20 countries of origin. The camp was designed to host 100,000 refugees; however, the camp has surpassed its capacity due to the continuous flow of new arrivals and will likely increase to over 250,000 in the coming 6 months. The new hospital in Kakuma 4 will improve the range of services available to the refugees and host community, such as the availability of an operating theatre. The hospital will significantly improve upon the poor infrastructural capacity of the current Kakuma Camp, and will allow health services to be provided more efficiently to those seeking assistance. A maintenance contract will be put in place with a Kenyan solar energy provider to ensure the longevity and proper use of the system. In addition to contributing to more cost effective programming, the solar power system will reduce local air pollution and contribute to national emission reductions. The IRC employs a participatory approach in the implementation of its programs. Refugee and host community populations will be involved in the entire project cycle to ensure that their needs are prioritized and guide program design.
