Over the last decade, the Burundian government has taken numerous measures to limit civic space in the country, including the right to freedom of expression. Civil society has shrunken and many NGOs were suspended. Over 200 000 Burundians have sought refuge in neighbouring countries. Against the backdrop of these events, the SCC programme in Burundi focusses on countering the repression of human rights defenders by the Burundian government. In parallel, the aim is to put pressure on the government to end human rights violations and to ensure accountable to the perpetrators. In particular, the programme targets women human rights defenders, who seem to be especially subject to human rights violations.
