Nearly 50% of all fish we consume is farmed fish. Aquaculture is an important source of high protein food for people worldwide. As aquaculture rapidly expands, so does its impact on the environment and people. Concerns are on: waste water management, coastal areas protection, antibiotics overuse, feed ingredients, disease management and working conditions. IDH aims to improve the environmental performance of fish farmers through two interventions. Supporting shrimp, talapia and pangasius farmers to transform to responsible practices. We do this primarily through a co-funding mechanism: The Fit Fund, that may co-finance GAP analyses, advice and training of small and large scale fish farmers on feed ingredients and disease management. Check the map below for co-funded projects Boosting market demand of responsibly farmed fish is the second pillar of our program. We do this through aligning and benchmarking existing standards and setting a responsible baseline, in the context of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI). Next to this IDH has an outreach program to European and US retailers. With WWF US IDH founded in 2009 the ASC, to launch a consumer faced responsibility label (based upon criteria set through a 10 year multi-stakeholder dialogue process).
