Sectoral needs assessments conducted by Save the Children Indonesia (SC) and local partner, Geutanyoe Foundation (Guetanyoe) in Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh and North Aceh, complemented by findings from National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and other local partners inform the design of the response. These reveal severe disruption to access safe water and sanitation, health and protection services. Flooding has contaminated wells and surface water sources, forcing communities to rely on unsafe alternatives for drinking and household (HH) use. Large amounts of debris and waste have accumulated, creating unsanitary conditions and health risks. There is an acute shortage of hygiene items (ie. soap, sanitary pads) leaving families unable to maintain basic cleanliness and increasing the risk of waterborne and hygiene-related diseases, which is worsened by the collapse of WASH infrastructure, with many latrines damaged or submerged. There is overflow, contamination, and open defecation in temporary shelters. Communities express a strong need for organized cleaning and waste management efforts, which will help restore safe living environments and provide short-term income opportunities if done via cash-for-work (CfW). As of 11 Dec, BNPB reports that 153 health facilities are damaged in Aceh, which limits access to essential primary health care. SC and its partners have deployed mobile health clinics (MHC) in 4 Aceh Tamiang locations, however additional units are urgently needed to reach remote, flood-isolated villages and deliver primary health care incl. psychosocial support (PSS). Strengthening of community-based protection systems is needed to identify, refer, and support children at risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Children face heightened risks of abuse, neglect, exploitation and sexual-gender based violence (SGBV) in overcrowded shelters as a result of disrupted family structures and limited supervision.
