Central and Southern Malawi has had heavy rainfall since the 23rd of January. After this, as a consequence of the cyclone in Mozambique, heavy rains have hit Malawi starting the 5th of March. People have sought shelter in schools, churches and other public buildings or are living in the open (UNOCHA Cyclone Idai Snapshot). Roads and infrastructure are heavily damaged, harvests have been destroyed, livestock such as poultry and goats drowned or were washed away due to floods and livestock kraals and irrigation schemes were washed away. As rains are expected to continue, there is an expected continued need for humanitarian assistance (ACAPS floods update) The key objective of the Idai Acute Crisis Joint Response in Malawi and Mozambique is to provide life-saving assistance, protection, dignity and safety to people affected by Cyclone Idai.
