The Amref Health Africa Specialist Outreach Programme was established in 1957 to take essential medical and surgical services to rural and underserved hospitals across eastern Africa. Over time, more than 300 hospitals in 8 countries have benefited from the services provided. Today the Programme continues to serve marginalized communities in various counties through the Amref Flying Doctors light aircraft, commercial flights and road transport. Over 30 hospitals are reached through Outreach visits in Kenya. The outreach Programme delivers surgical interventions to patients with specific surgical problems such as obstetric fistula, genitourinary problems, and congenital and acquired defects including deformities and disabilities caused by cleft lip or palate, burns, injuries, leprosy and polio affecting the very poor and disadvantaged. These types of surgeries are performed in Centres of Excellence, which include national or local hospitals that have been developed to provide these services and have special facilities and specially trained staff. Developing Centres of Excellence for various conditions has become a major focus area for the Outreach Programme. This is done with a view to build local capacity, ensure quality of services and improve accessibility to health care.
