  • autorenew Implementation (Status)

The Litani River is the longest river in Lebanon and a major source for drinking and irrigation water for the Bekaa and the South and an important source for hydropower. The river debouches into Lake Qaraoun and is heavily polluted by municipal waste, waste water and excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture. It also suffers from the overabstraction of groundwater through many unlicensed wells in the basin. Large fi sh kills in Lake Qaraoun have triggered large media attention. The project will supply Water Quality Monitoring Stations and Ultra sonic algae control devices to the Litani River Authority (LRA), contributing to the wider Business Plan for Combating Pollution of Lake Qaraoun. This will be complemented by capacity building in water quality monitoring and data management, and good governance.
