In this project, RD2 Vision will carry out a pilot project to assess the effectiveness of cheap soil test kits in Côte d'Ivoire. Soil analysis in laboratories is often expensive and require logistics that are not adapted for individual farmers or cooperatives. As a result, many cocoa farmers cultivate their cocoa trees on unsuitable plots and may use the wrong fertilizer. Through this pilot project, the soil test kits will be tested to see if they are well calibrated and accurate. Additionally, the user friendliness of the soil test kits will be checked. After this pilot, there will be solid ground to use the test kit in a selected cooperative and monitor the results and impact on fertilizer efficiency and productivity. The project partners UTZ, COOPAGA, CNRA and ANADER will use the evidence of the project to lobby internally and in the sector to support cooperatives and farmers to test their soils (using a soil test kit), access and apply tailored fertilizer and make the necessary services available.
