More than 30 million people are infected by the virus and 2.9 million are recovered. At the peak of the second wave of the pandemic there were more than 400,000 cases everyday. More than 390,000 fatalities have been reported in the country due to COVID-19. The ferocious second wave of the coronavirus has left hospitals scrabbling for beds and oxygen as India reported over 3,000 deaths every day during the peak. With cases rising continuously and rapidly, the pandemic appears to be a bigger threat to both the health system as well as the economic system than it did during the first wave. The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought social and economic life to a standstill. Apart from the millions affected physically by the disease, the economy of the country has taken a severe blow. The poor and vulnerable groups are the most affected. The restrictions on mobility have amplified loss of life and livelihood. People were yet to recover from the initial impact of the pandemic. Experts estimate that if vaccinations are not ramped up and the virus is not contained, it could have a severe impact on people’s life and will lead to massive loss of jobs and income. That could push more families into poverty.
