SAWA will work with 2,120 smallholder households in the main vegetable producing area of Meru county to increase the visibility, voice, choice and control of women in the vegetable value chain. This will be achieved by organizing and building the capacity of farmers (especially women) to enabling efficient market access, improved production and better terms of trade, among others by making use of the Commercial Village Model. This is an organic business model through which administrative villages are graduated into commercialized trade entities that are built and supported to interact with other value chain actors as effective business partners. This project adapts this existing model to put women’s economic empowerment at the forefront.
