Out of the Margins: Strengthening Independent Multimedia Journalism from Across Jordan

Project Objectives: Stimulate engagement with  socio-political, socio-cultural, socio-economic impacting different communities in Jordan issues through producing and publishing multimedia storytelling that speaks to communities’ conditions, concerns, and aspirations. Increase public awareness on issues of governance through producing and publishing well-researched data-driven reporting on governmental policies and decisions impacting communities across Jordan, both on the local and national level. 7iber will work towards these two goals by publishing pieces produced within the project on its national platform, for these reports to reach the socially and politically engaged audiences of 7iber. Outcome 1: Stories of under-reported communities across Jordan engage 7iber’s readers and lead to a nuanced understanding of the issues they face. Results Multimedia pieces telling stories of different communities across Jordan in the form of profiles and features reach 7iber's audience. Video features telling stories from Jordan, including stories of people, spaces, communities, and community projects reach 7iber's audience. Gender-related aspects: 7iber will assign female senior journalists to work in pieces, in addition to male senior journalists. 7iber will ensure to highlight and tell stories of women from different communities, offering a diverse representation of women and their stories. 7iber will ensure to represent stories of women and their projects within the video features. Activities Produce and publish multimedia pieces telling stories of different communities across Jordan in the form of profiles and features. Produce and publish video features telling stories from Jordan, including stories of people, spaces, communities, and community projects. Resources Human Resources: Project Manager, senior journalists, editor, videographer, multimedia designer Physical Resources: Video equipment Outcome 2: Aspiring journalists from governorates across Jordan increase their capacity to produce engaging, data-driven reports. Results Six fellows from governorates across Jordan trained extensively on journalism skills through workshops on in-depth reporting and writing, writing profiles, data journalism, and digital storytelling, and are able to continue producing high quality journalism from their governorates after the project ends. Gender-related aspects: 7iber will ensure to encourage women to apply to the fellowship through inclusive language and visual language in its promotion of the fellowship, and through targeted promotion of the call for applications. 7iber will ensure to select based on merit, and ensure balanced female representation within the fellows. 7iber will invite female trainers to lead workshops, in addition to male trainers. When coaching the fellows on the production of their reports and stories, 7iber will encourage them and guide them to have a feminist approach to reporting, whether in the sources they seek, questions they ask, or the writing of the final product. Fellows produce in-depth reports on issues of accountability and local governance. Activities listed in the project’s budget aim to compensate fellows and freelance journalists fairly, contribute to the compensation of 7iber’s team members based on the percentage of time they spend working towards the implementation of project activities, in addition to associated running costs, such as production costs for different pieces and workshop related expenses.
