Our ‘IMPACT in South Asia’ Group focuses on people with mental illness and targets a major (and growing) cause of global disease burden: mental and physical multimorbidity which affects some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in LMICs. We aim to improve the physical health of people with severe mental illness and the mental health of people with chronic physical conditions. We will harness York’s multidisciplinary expertise in epidemiological and intervention research on multimorbidity, and partners’ knowledge of health systems and social, political and cultural contexts in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. We will build sustainable world-class research teams and a regional hub to provide a platform for securing large-scale grants and responsive research programmes to address the critical lack of evidence on effective interventions for mental and physical multimorbidity; and to support their scale-up, sustainability, and transferability across LMIC health systems in South Asia.
