By offering a more nuanced understanding of the complex conflict drivers that enable the increase of violent extremism (VE) in the Sahel region, built on locally-led analysis, this project will generate both valuable data on conflict dynamics and manageable recommendations to strengthen community resilience to conflict and recruitment of youth into violent groups as well as increasing capacities for countering violent extremism and peacebuilding. In Mali we will reduce youth vulnerabilities to radicalization including recruitment by armed groups through addressing underlying root causes of social and political marginalization by enhancing their conflict-management and leadership competencies and skills. The accompanying research will analyse and provide recommendations around youth marginalisation and consequent violence, especially VE, in nomadic/ semi-nomadic Peuls communities living across the Malian, Nigerien and Burkinabe’s borders.
