The “Ijwi ry’Abahinzi n’Aborozi†(Farmer’s Voices) Project aims to tackle this head on by strengthening the participatory research and advocacy capacities of existing civil society bodies working on food security (including farmer cooperatives, value chain associations and research organisations) and creating mutually compatible District Farmers Network (DFN) that offer a space for farmers to voice their concerns and recommendations. At present most farmer cooperatives and unions are organised around specific commodities (i.e. maize, rice, Irish potatoes, coffee, tea). Opportunities to collaborate across sectors are missed. Through this action, the DFN will bring together different farmer cooperatives, unions and informal groups, agro-dealers, and Twigire Muhinzi extension workers, to combine advocacy campaigns and hone their mobilization around a small number of specific national level policy issues to bring about a wider change.
