Our Strengthening women’s role in peace project aims to facilitate the implementation and monitoring of the ANP at the local and provincial level. Focusing on Participation and Protection, the project will work with both men and women at the community level to create an enabling environment to promote women’s participation in decision-making processes and improve protection at the community level. Capitalizing on the momentum generated at the local level, the project will support the establishment of a mechanism that facilitates women’s participation and allows for local needs and sensitivities to be incorporated in the implementation of the ANP and for these needs to be communicated to the provincial and the national level. We aim to build “bottom-up” capacity for female community members, as well as male community members (whose buy-in is essential), to address barriers that restrict women’s , and less powerful men’s, participation in decision-making processes, as well as their access to justice and security. We aim to work with communities and with, rather than against, cultural and religious norms to overcome barriers which prevent the meaningful improvement of women’s conditions. Working through a consortium of local and international expertise, the project will be implemented in the provinces of Herat (in the West), Baghlan (in the North), Laghman (in the East), Nangarhar (also in the East) and Kandahar (in the South) over a period of 36 months, with implementation beginning in Herat and Nangarhar, and the other three provinces following in the second stage.
