Reducing barriers to education in rural Ethiopia: by promoting sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene for life

"Scale & location o The project will cover 30 schools in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), Ethiopia. Project Objective: To reduce school absenteeism and contribute to the improvement of quality education through creating safe school environment & WASH in 30 schools. Beneficiary: Through this project, it is planned to work with 12 Kebeles; 6 reaching 36,209 people (18,195 females, 18,014 males) and 6 reaching 51,853 people (26,099 females, 25,754 males). In all, 88,062 people across two districts will benefit from increased access to safe water and sustainable sanitation. Proposed project outcomes: 1. Improved school facilities and services through the construction and/or rehabilitation of girl-friendly and disability appropriate school buildings. 2. Improved access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities in schools. 3. Improved hygiene practices in school communities 4. Increased awareness on menstrual hygiene management for adolescent girls, boys, teachers and parents 5. Improved capacity of school teachers, parents and students to manage school facilities and create safe and conducive teaching and learning environment. This project sits under the current Ethiopia CSP Country Programme EsDec, in that it seeks to improve sanitation and hygiene practices and expanding access to sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) facilities among children through community mobilisation. "
