Collecting and recycling plastic and other waste, to improve the health and environment of poor urban communities in Carrefour, Haiti.

The intended impact of the project remains for Carrefour to model a sustainable green community. This is to be achieved by establishing sustainable waste management and developing recycling and behavioural changes in Lamentin that can be adapted in the rest of Carrefour. By leveraging a local waste collection and recycling social business, 15,000 primary beneficiaries in Lamentin, Carrefour (metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti) will have access to sustainable solid waste management (SWM) services which reduce ocean plastics. We will mobilise a further 5,000 beneficiaries in Lamentin to change their SWM behaviours. We expect to reduce waste dumped into oceans or subject to open burning (which releases toxic fumes) by 182.7 tonnes per month by project end and to recycle 148.3 tonnes per month (of which 62.2 tonnes will be plastic). This will create improved livelihoods for marginalised individuals. We will also advocate for improved SWM and provide stakeholders and local government with robust evidence to support scale-up of pro-poor sustainable waste management. We will deliver a genuine triple win for people living in poverty: improved environment (including reductions in ocean plastics), improved health and wellbeing, and income generation.
