Sports for Health Phase II

Adolescents in Dagoretti and Embakasi face multiple barriers that affect their immediate and long-term futures. Young people lack knowledge of SRHR topics and struggle to access services. Additionally, there are few support mechanisms and social networks to increase personal wellbeing, educational opportunities and career pathways. Sports is a key entry point to tackling these issues, as it fosters teamwork, relationship building and creates safe spaces. Coaches, teammates and teachers become role models for adolescent youth and impart essential life-skills. Whilst Phase I achieved strong SRHR outcomes, there is a need to continue the project to reach adolescents not yet supported. Additionally, greater integration of sports and physical activity with training and development opportunities is needed to provide more holistic and sustainable support. In Phase II, we will reach 4,500 adolescent girls and boys in Dagoretti and Embakasi over three years, using sports and physical activity to engage on SRHR topics, provide personal, educational and career development training, and integrate health service provision. New activities in Phase II include supporting boys as well as girls, increasing our focus on hard-to-reach groups such as adolescent mothers and those living in informal settlements, developing our sports provision within schools, improving development pathways for talented athletes, and strengthening the links between sports, life skills and future development.
