Increasing the Expertise of Nurses and Midwives through eLearning to Improve Outcomes for Vulnerable Pregnant Mothers and Children in Uganda

Amref Health Africa UK, in partnership with Amref Health Africa Uganda, is implementing a project that will train nurses and/or midwives in the areas of (1) customer care and professionalisation (2) the nursing process (3) Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC), via an eLearning approach. The project is aiming to contribute towards improving health outcomes of women and children in Uganda. The intervention will contribute to the achievement of SDG 3: health and well-being for all, including targets 3.1 to reduce MMR and 3.2 to end preventable deaths of children and newborns. The expected change will be achieved by training 300 health workers to provide specialized care, which will improve the capacity of 15 health facilities to better deliver quality maternal and child health care services. The project will take place in the Kampala district of Uganda and be implemented in the Mengo Nursing and Midwifery Training School and Nsambya School of Nursing and Midwifery. The schools have been selected to ensure we reach students in urban and rural areas. Health workers will be trained through these training institutes, and tutors/mentors will also be trained to support these workers. The trained health workers will then deliver high quality, comprehensive health care to women and children who visit the 15 health facilities. This will improve outcomes for vulnerable pregnant mothers and children in Uganda.
