This two-and-a-half-year (2019 – 2022) project in the West Nile region of Northern Uganda aims to relieve human suffering by providing 500 women with life changing restorative surgery for obstetric fistula. The project includes screening of women, followed by surgeries and thorough postoperative care, as well as support to reintegrate back into their community and opportunities to develop their own livelihoods. In addition, the project will include key elements of community awareness raising around the causes and effects of obstetric fistula, as well as how it can be prevented and treated. Amref will work primarily with Arua regional hospital and Nebbi district hospital as well as selected community health facilities. Regional and national-level specialists will be brought in to conduct the surgeries. By focussing on the West Nile region of Northern Uganda, this project presents an opportunity to reach out to the South Sudanese and Congolese refugee population and provide them with the same comprehensive package of care. It will also build upon existing relationships with local government, health facilities and communities built up through previous interventions in the region.
