Project is aimed at enhancing the capacity of selected government district hospitals to provide eye health care services as part of their health service delivery. The project targets district hospitals of the government and enable them to provide secondary level eye health care services as well as utilise these as referral point for eye health and develop a system of reporting on performances up to the national level led by the NEC, DGHS. The trained health and family planning workers and community clinics refer people with eye problem and cataract patients to the district hospitals from the community level; besides, many patients are identified through patient screening programmes (PSP) to take services at the door steps of the rural poor, particularly women. As GoB is taking care of key costs such as the salaries of the surgeon, nurses, the district level health administrator and other officials, as well as the infrastructures, cost sharing for equipment, MSR and maintenance; the project has the opportunity of making eye care services sustainable particularly for the poor people of the localities of the concerned district and also other adjacent districts. It is expected that the district eye care programme will contribute to reduce the blindness burden of our country and ultimately introduce the scope of decentralised planning for budget and implementation of eye health care. Thus, it will help to achieve the goal of Vision 2020.
