Still recovering from a two-decade long civil conflict, the developmental levels of Northern Uganda lags significantly behind those of the rest of country, which itself remains a low-income country. Most of the population live in ruraly isolated communities and are dependent upon subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods. This project works with 100 households in Paicho Sub-County moving them from low-value, locally sold produce, to high-value, internationally marketable produce. Current average annual household agricultural income of 550,268 UGX is expected to grow to 1,400,000 UGX per year by the end of this 2-year project. Farmers will benefit from a holistic training programme and all inputs required in establishing their own agricultural businesses, growing their choice of bananas, chilies and ginger. The project will also assist farmers in regenerating seed stock and accessing reliable markets such that their agricultural income can be sustained indefinitely, and even grow.
