This project seeks to increase access to vital signs monitoring for pregnant women in Sierra Leone through the national rollout of the CRADLE Vital Signs Alert (CVSA) device, a Blood Pressure (BP) and Heart Rate (HR) monitoring device designed for use in low-resource settings. Phase 1 of the rollout will last 18 months and be led by Welbodi Partnership. We will work in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) and key partners to deliver the device and accompanying training package to health workers at all health facilities in eight of Sierra Leone’s 16 Districts. The CVSA enhances recognition of shock and pre-eclampsia/eclampsia through a novel traffic light system and alerts the user as to when intervention, often life-saving, is necessary. Following the successful pilot of the CRADLE VSA device at Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) and 13 surrounding peripheral health units (PHU) in 2016, Welbodi Partnership is well-placed to run this project. The randomised controlled trial, which we operated in Freetown in partnership with King’s College London (KCL), demonstrated that the introduction of the CRADLE VSA device to health facilities in Sierra Leone had a positive impact on both health workers and patients: the CRADLE VSA pilot was associated with more than a 40% reduction in eclampsia, and more than a 60% reduction in maternal death in Sierra Leone. See http://cradletrial.com/ for more details of the research underpinning the device.
