Start Alert 343 Freetown Flood Emergency Reponses

The crisis was as result of the torrential heavy rainfall on 2nd August 2019 that caused flash flooding in many locations within Freetown. Over 39,000 people were directly affected and 5,000 people are displaced from their homes (Joint Rapid assessment report). The flooding caused loss of properties and livelihood, damaged infrastructure, deaths and injuries were also reported. Those affected need urgent need of food and essential none food items, clean water and improved sanitation. The rains are still ongoing and there is prediction by the government, in line with the normal raining season in this country that more flooding may happen in the coming days. The proposed project is a contribution towards the prevention of a potential disease outbreak and restoration of assets among the 1298HH flood affected women, men, boys and girls in selected affected areas of Culvert, Culvert, Dan Street, Mabella, Mamba Ridge /Moeba, Adolphus Street Upgun, Kanikay – through comprehensive WASH package and a multi-purpose one off cash transfer. The project activities include direct delivery of safe and clean water, distribution of Hygiene and dignity kits, sanitation and hygiene promotion and treatment of water resources, repair of sanitation and water facilities and drainage clearance. The Multipurpose cash is one off cash transfer for the fully damaged households @ SLL 400,000/HH that will allow the affected people to use cash as a choice for fulfilling their various needs and will also enable them to restore their basic assets.
