More than 2 billion people live in fragile and conflict affected states. It is estimated that by 2018 around half, and by 2030 most, of the world’s poor will live in fragile and conflict affected states. Out of the 65 million reportedly displaced by conflict and violence today, 95% live in developing countries. At the same time, 90% of the violent conflicts that erupted in the 2000s were old conflicts. The record of peace agreements does not tell a story of success in promoting sustainable peace. Obstacles to success include limited attention to long-term efforts of addressing structural causes of violent conflict as well as insufficient inclusion of women, youth and marginalized groups in peace and other political decision-making processes. This scenario has sparked increased attention to prevention of violent conflict and ‘sustaining peace’ at the level of UN-HQ and spear-headed by the UN-SG. Accordingly, Denmark will invest in peace, stability and protection in developing countries and the Danish Development and Humanitarian Strategy 2017 has SDG Goal 16 on peace, justice and institutional development at the center. An example of Denmark’s increased emphasis on peace and security is the centrality of this dimension in the new 2017 Mali-Denmark Country Programme. The overall objective of the programme: to promote sustainable peacebuilding and prevention of violent conflict through strengthening the participation of women and youth in peace processes.
