Caritas Denmark’s support to India is geographically focused to the isolated region of North East India, bordering Myanmar, China, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Caritas Denmark has worked with five partners in this region since 1999. The programme has been one of Caritas Denmark’s most successful, where in 2015 the target groups managed to fundraise more funds locally than those received from Caritas Denmark. An exit strategy for the end of 2018 has therefore been underway over the past three years. The programme will be consolidated with a 2018 budget of DKK 1.8 million. The programme has demonstrated positive impact in improving the livelihoods of the rural farmers in North East India and the programme is assessed to be sustainable. Funds for the on-going activities are secured by tapping into Indian government development funds. The focus of the exit phase is to consolidate the already-made changes, especially those of the federations, which are key to support self-help groups in gaining sustainability. These self-help groups have been supported to start up community loan groups and strengthen the marketing of their agricultural produce. This is done through value-chain activities and the establishment of a marketing association, serving farmers in the region. At the same time, the farmers have received training in business development to allow them to access both the national market as well as the international market.
