Caritas Denmark will continue to be engaged in the Malian displacement crisis, which started in 2012 and has now become a protracted crisis for thousands of refugees fleeing the violent conflict in Mali into western Niger. The majority of the Malian refugees live in camps, while others opt to reside with the host populations outside the camps. It is these refugees living outside the camps in Ayorou and their host communities that Caritas Denmark through Caritas Niger will continue to support with livelihood activities via a humanitarian-development nexus approach during 2018-2021 with a budget of DKK 10 million over four years. In addition, extremely vulnerable IDPs will be included in the engagement during 2019-2021. The main objective is to strengthen self-reliance and reduce vulnerability of both Malian refugees, IDPs and their host community in Ayorou to support a sustainable integration process. The main emphasis lies within three sectors of intervention: food security, water and sanitation, and income generation. Separate income generating initiatives will be targeting the youth.
