2018/21 HUMUG South Sudan Displacement Uganda

Caritas Denmark will during 2018-2021 scale-up its support amounting to DKK 9 million to Caritas Uganda for the provision of humanitarian response to the regional South Sudan displacement crises, which has seen more than 1 million refugees taking refuge in the Northern parts of Uganda. Caritas Denmark has worked for over 15 years with Caritas Uganda within its development portfolio. In 2017, the cooperation was expanded to include humanitarian activities within the agricultural sector in Northern Uganda with the grant of DKK 3.5 million from the MFA Call for Proposal for the South Sudan crisis. With ongoing conflict and increasing displacement from South Sudan into Uganda, Caritas Denmark will continue to provide livelihood support for vulnerable refugees and host populations. At the same time strengthening the capacity of Caritas Uganda and relevant implementing dioceses to be at the forefront of the humanitarian response in Northern Uganda. The aim of this is to enable an effective and efficient humanitarian response, which recognises and allows for a prominent role for local and national actors. Caritas Denmark will promote durable solutions for the South Sudanese refugees to ensure their dignity and ability to cater for their families. Caritas Uganda will in close collaboration with the Government of Uganda, the UN and NGOs provide agricultural tools and training for the newly arrived refugees. To prevent conflict over scarce resources in the region, host communities will also be included in the project activities.
