VLIR-UOS supports interventions that strengthen higher education, research and extension in various domains. All interventions frame with the VLIR-UOS Country Strategy for Suriname which is in line with the national development plan. The overall objective of VLIR-UOS in Suriname is ‘to contribute to the sustainable development of the country. The strategy is translated in to the following main themes: sustainable management of natural resources, public health, social development and education. The following transversal themes were identified as being important to all VLIR-UOS interventions in the country: support of the partner institutions in terms of policy (good governance), management (HRM & (institutional) capacity building) and internationalization; support of threefold task of the institution: education, research and service to society. The core of the 2017-2021 programme remains the IUC programme with Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname (AdeKUS) which finalised its Phase 2 cooperation by the end of 2017 and then entered a Phase Out phase running until the end of 2019. Apart from this one newly selected intervention (SI) on clean energy started in 2017 as part of the 2017-2021 country programme. More short-term (2 years) departmental thematic (SI) projects might be selected during the coming selection rounds. TEAM projects are not foreseen since there is already a broad IUC programme with the only university of Suriname.
