Indonesia recently returned to the VLIR-UOS list of partner countries -after a few years without project opportunities- because of its enormous potential for university cooperation and the growing interest of Flemish HEI to work with Indonesian HEI. VLIR-UOS supports interventions that empower higher education institutes in their role as drivers of change by strengthening their threefold mission of research, education and extension to society. All interventions frame within the VLIR-UOS Country Strategy for Indonesia, which fits in the Indonesian national development, higher education priorities and the JSF. The strategy is translated in 3 domains: environment (maritime sciences, natural disaster management, natural resources management, disaster mitigation, climate change, sustainable tourism, conservation, geographical hazards), government/civil society (interreligious dialogue and religion-based conflicts, decentralisation, urban/rural development, conflict and development, basic infrastructure, good governance, democratization, educational research, sustainable development), food security/agriculture (sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, fishery, food patterns). Special attention should go to cross-cutting and supporting issues related to higher education and research (scientific thinking, academic English, multidisciplinary research, community based research, statistics and data management, proposal writing, promoting innovation) and gender. The programme will be a kind of exploratory phase aiming at motivating researchers to submit project proposals for TEAM and South Initiatives.
