Though the number of conflicts worldwide is shrinking, parts of Africa remain entangled in ethnic, religious and political strife. The absence of central government authority in countries such as DR Congo and the Central African Republic holds citizens hostage in militia-run regions without access to information and education, means to engage in economic development or decentralised systems for the rule of law or human security. In countries such as Mali, Somalia and Burundi, ethnic and regional dissent undermines economic growth and social cohesion. Large segments of the population are unable to access timely, accurate and trustworthy information. Women and youth are particularly under-served in national peace-building initiatives. In the absence of human security, women and youth are also victimised by gender-based violence and child soldier recruitment. Media and civil society advocacy groups are included in the approach in order to advocate for improved access to information. Innovation is needed to increase the access to digital information for local communities. FPU activities will also serve as a platform for dialogue and debate for local stakeholders with an emphasis on the participation of women and youth in the media, thus empowering them to become agents of change. In strong coordination with other international (media) development organisations, resilient structures will be developed to increase impact and added value of the international assistance programmes in the region.
