The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (IHAA) is an alliance partner within the strategic Partnership to Inspire, Transform and Connect the HIV response (PITCH). This strategic partnership aims to beat the AIDS epidemic in countries that are most affected by HIV. In these countries we will strengthen local civil society organisations to advocate for equal access to HIV and sexual and reproductive health-related services; equal sexual and reproductive health and rights for those most affected by HIV; and decriminalisation, particularly for key populations. We will build new coalitions and bring local evidence to global policy development level. Policy makers and governments do not always make the right choices. Policy makers and societies discriminate. As a strategic partnership we want to change this situation by focusing our advocacy on human rights, including sexual rights, on increasing investments in HIV, and on improving access to HIV prevention and treatment. Advocacy can change laws, policies, and the norms in societies that lead to human rights violations. By changing these norms, addressing human rights violations, and improving access to HIV services, we believe we will make a significant contribution to ending the AIDS epidemic. At the end of 2013, there were 35 million people living with HIV. This number is rising as more people are living longer because of antiretroviral therapy, alongside the still high number of new HIV infections. HIV prevalence is estimated to be 28 times higher among people who inject drugs, 12 times higher among sex workers, 19 times higher among men who have sex with men and up to 49 times higher among transgender women than among the rest of the adult population. In sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent girls and young women account for one in four new HIV infections.
