Rapid action is urgently needed to scale up the drought response in these regions in order to safeguard livelihoods and prevent further erosion of household’s nutrition and food security. The proposed activities closely align with the Call for Aid and 2016 HRP by focusing on the provision of immediate emergency life-saving and life-sustaining assistance to the most vulnerable, and restoring and strengthening livelihoods to build resilience to recurrent shocks in El Niño-affected regions. As stated in the Call for Aid, priority is to provide cash to save lives and enable recovery of livelihoods for pastoralists and agro-pastoralists through provision of unconditional cash transfers for vulnerable households, cash for work to rebuild essential infrastructure as well as livestock treatment. This is critical for improving household purchasing power to enable repayment of food credit, access to diversified food from local markets, reducing negative coping mechanisms while improving livestock production through disease control. The proposed locations, objectives and activities for this project are in line with the Call for Aid priorities.
