1.2 million children are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition in Somalia in 2018 (HNO) as both Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) have surpassed the emergency threshold. With Approximately half of the country’s population under the age of 15, child health is incredibly important. Severely malnourished children are nine times more likely to die of fatal diseases AWD, cholera and measles, and as such, the importance of involving multiple sectors, such as health, is essential to addressing malnutrition, as recommended in the HNO. For this reason, Save the Children is implementing an integrated Health and Nutrition programme, with a focus on screening and treating cases of SAM and providing primary health services via static and mobile sites in order to access hard-to-reach areas.
