Somalia remains on the edge of a humanitarian catastrophe. Continuing drought from 2016/17 means very little recovery and resilience for millions of Somalis who have lost their livestock and access to adequate food and water sources. Erratic rains and abnormally hot and dry conditions in the first half of 2019 further exacerbated the drought crisis, with about 6.3 million Somalis – about 42% of the entire population – requiring humanitarian assistance – i.e. expected to be acutely food insecure through December 2019. 2.1 million of these are projected to face severe acute food insecurity conditions (IPC 3+), a 40% increase from January this year. , An estimated one million children under the age of five are likely to be acutely malnourished through mid-2020 and 2.6 million people remain displaced. Given the needs and expertise of the members, the SOMJR 2020 will continue to implement in the same sectors as the SOMJR 2019. These include FSL, WASH, Health, Nutrition, Protection and Multi-Purpose Cash.
