In East Africa, there is a large skills gap in the logistics sector. to address this challenge, the Logistics Directorate in TMEA has designed a programme which seeks to establish an appropriate capacity-building programmes using a harmonised curriculum in the region to meet emerging demands as trade grows. This is a continuation of a similar programme implemented in Strategy I TMEA where undertook training of freight forwarders & clearing agents under the East Africa Customs and Freight Forwarding Practicing Certificate (EACFFPC) programme. Key results included training of over 4000 freight forwarders and support of EAC legislation making it mandatory for freight forwarding firms to have at least two certified freight forwarders in any firm. Inputs from the programme were used to develop a new programme on training for Strategy II of TMEA. The need for a capacity building programme was felt because the lack of such programmes significantly disadvantages smaller logistics firms as compared to the larger ones limiting competition in the sector. The programme has three components: (i) capacity building of truck drivers, (ii) capacity building of freight forwarders and (iii) capacity building of warehouse operators. TMEA will work with FEAFFA on components (ii) and (iii) as FEAFFA does not work in the trucking sector.;Business Competitiveness
