Frontier Technology Livestreaming (FTL) is a DFID-funded initiative, implemented by IMC Worldwide, which aims to apply frontier technologies to the biggest challenges in development. The initiative aims to allow DFID to pilot, test and refine Frontier Technology solutions live in their programmes and countries of operation, producing a stream of learning, insights and innovations. The FTL Pilot Project for Electrification of Rural Clinics in Zimbabwe, managed by Africa Power Storage (APS) in partnership with Crown Agents, forms part of this initiative. The project is piloting an innovative solution to the significant challenge of access to electricity across Sub-Saharan Africa. There are 600 million people living in Sub-Saharan Africa either without access to power or with unreliable access to power. This lack of energy access negatively impacts on health care delivery, particularly in remote regions. It can mean that medical procedures have to be carried out by candle light, many types of medical equipment cannot be used, and the cold-chain for vaccines and other vital health products cannot be maintained. APS’ SolarEnabler is a smart, connected, solar generator with integrated, advanced lithium battery storage, designed to collect and store PV solar power and to distribute that power intelligently. APS have designed the SolarEnabler as an all-in-one wall-mounted unit which accepts standard PV solar connectors and outputs power through user-friendly power connectors. Relative to conventional solar generators, the SolarEnabler is simple and quick to install.
