By establishing community-based solid waste collection and recycling social enterprises, we will provide 54,000 primary beneficiaries (slum residents) in Karachi and Hyderabad access to sustainable solid waste management services which reduce ocean plastics. We will mobilise a further 12,000 individuals (indirectly benefiting a further 6,000) to change their SWM behaviours. We expect to reduce plastic and other waste dumped into oceans or subject to open burning (which releases toxic fumes) by 216 tonnes per year by project end, reducing burned and ocean plastics by approximately 13 tonnes per year. In doing so, we will create livelihoods for marginalised individuals. We will also advocate for improved SWM and provide stakeholders and local government with robust evidence to support scale-up of pro-poor sustainable waste management. We will deliver a genuine triple win for people living in poverty: improved environment (including reductions in ocean plastics), improved health and well-being, and income generation.
