Contigency Plan for Potential Pre/Post Election Humanitarian Response to the 2013 Kenyan General Elections

Kenya conducted the last general election in 2007 which witnessed the most pronounced violence episode since independence which led to the death of an estimated 1,133 people and the displacement of more than 600,000 people in three provinces (Nairobi, Rift Valley and Nyanza). As Kenya prepares itself to participate in the next general election on the 4th of March 2013, Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has prepared a contingency plan based on its experience from the last elections; its analysis of the current political situation; dialogue with Government and other agencies. The aims of the election preparedness plans are: - To preposition emergency shelter, relief, health care and nutrition stocks. - To increase the capacity of KRCS teams to undertake assessment and provide emergency response. - To disseminate Red Cross principles and create awareness of international humanitarian law ;
