This project will look at mentorship as a quality improvement tool in the outcome of cataract surgery. Little is known about effective methods of improving the quality of cataract surgery in low income countries and monitoring outcome alone is inadequate to improve quality. Other methods of quality improvement need to be explored. Mentoring is widely used elsewhere to improve quality but needs to be assessed in low income settings before it can be advocated as a quality improvement tool. Mentors are experienced clinicians who support hospital teams to manage change. Mentors have been shown, in some cases, to be effective change agents. This study aims to assess whether using mentors in hospitals in low income countries can improve the quality of cataract surgery.
