The HelpAge International (HelpAge) plan will focus on protection, and inclusion in health and WASH sector activities, especially for older people (OP) and older people with disability (PWD). In the HAI Rapid Needs Assessment of Older People (RNA-OP) 41% of OP reported they are unable to reach aid services alone. More than 95% of the men and 93% women feel at risk of physical abuse, neglect/isolation, and denial of services and resources. Health responses are currently constrained because 22 healthcare facilities were impacted, including three hospitals, ten primary health centres, four sub-primary health centres and five village health posts. An estimated 152,000 people need WASH support. RNA-OP confirmed that over 25% of OP have inadequate access to toilet and washing facilities. 41% who have some access, said they have inadequate privacy and safety while accessing toilet and bathing facilities. Anticipated increased health risks include water borne diseases (cholera, dysentery, typhoid) and vector borne diseases (malaria, dengue, and chikungunya) and vaccine preventable diseases (measles, tetanus and diphtheria). Waste management, provision of water and sanitation, and vector control is essential (WHO sitrep 10.10.18). Ensuring access for OP and PWD to life-saving services is essential in providing full protection for this high-risk community.
